Some words need lots of time to chew on to be digested, fully understood and give you some new insight. Metabolism was such a word to me, and seems to be of Greek origin and meaning ‘change’. That got me to the song’s title ‘we never change’ by Coldplay. Hanging on this descending parachute of time, my eye gets hold of sixteenth century Italian physician Santorio Santorii who’s seen as being on the cradle of the understanding of metabolism, having weighed himself for thirty years, comparing the weight what he head eaten to that of his waste products. To account for the difference, he thought it was because of ‘insensible persperation’. We still had a long way to go by then. Some things never change.
